International Students Paying More For Education At UK Universities

Figures from a new education survey suggests that some pricing structures will result in international students paying more for education at UK universities then their international counterparts. Indeed, students coming to study in the UK from outside the European Union will be charged up to four times the fees of those from the UK in the coming year. Some international students will be asked to pay university fees of £35,000 – compared to the UK and European fees of close a maximum of £9,000.

The research was done on behalf of the Complete University Guide, and asked 110 UK universities how much they expected to charge for tuition in the 2013/2014 academic year – more than half of university are charging the maximum fees for UK students. Scottish and EU students studying north of the border will, however, will pay far less at only £1, 820 a year.

The most expensive fees for international students – set at £35,000 as noted above – apply to medical type degrees, with King’s College London among those charging this sum. The same course at University College London will cost £33, 750, whilst Sheffield, Southampton, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and Cambridge will all charge international students more than £30,000 to study medicine.

Still, some post-graduate courses are equally as expensive – with Oxford University Business School charging £41,000 for both UK and international students.

In response to the findings, a spokeswoman for Universities UK had the following to say:

“It is worth remembering that international student fees are not regulated, as is the case with home fees. UK universities compete in a global market for international students, and their tuition fees reflect this.”
